One Woman Show, I Can't Bring Myself To Smile, The Puddle
The "One Woman Show" 7" captures Nick Krgovich, perhaps best known to many as the driving force behind the acclaimed groups P:ano and Burquitlam Plaza in an interesting moment. These three songs were initially recorded as an experiment in pop music which produced wonderful results. Nick felt a need to come to some sort of conclusion about varied recording techniques by writing songs with conventional chord progressions and willfully obscuring them with dark reverbs and implying rhythm rather than a pronounced beat. The tones of the guitars and keyboards also are heavily affected making it hard to discern the instrumentation yet there is no loss to the strong melodies that are always contained in Nick's compositions. These initial descisions leave the listener more involved in the songs, like having the music box left open so that you can peer inside to see the gears actually turning themselves. The songs on "One Woman Show" have a unique quality to them, they could easily feel at home on a P:ano recording, but by staying with one musical vision we are rewarded with hearing the groundwork of Nick's songwriting recorded in the comfortable setting of his home studio.
