Violent Kin is a force built by the minds of brother/sister team S.J.Kardash and Maygen Kardash. Armed with a brutally honest and raw M.O., the Kin wrote, produced, recorded, and publicized their debut album "Bitter Blood” (2009) with their own bare hands—an album that was lauded as “danceable”, “chilling”, “poetic”, “funky”, “serious”, “baroque”, and “tender” all in one review (Bianca Marcus, Chartattack). Well-seasoned after a full year of successes including a New York residency, showcases at CMJ, CMW, NXNE, and LA’s famed Viper Room, as well as dates alongside UK buzz band Band of Skulls and an extensive North American tour of their own, the Kin were again ready to strike.
And so Violent Kin created the Velvet Hideout EP. Dark and dancey, the four-song album pays homage to Genesis and Tears for Fears, but moves in a way that can only be described as “electro-rock”. Taking a nod from Fleetwood Mac, the lead vocal is won by the singer who is telling the story, though the harmonies make the song whole. With guitar riffs that are lonely and plaintive one moment and reminiscent of Michael Jackson the next, synth lines that turn from hauntingly pretty to infectiously fun, and drums that will eat you alive, the Velvet Hideout EP has legs of its own; but it is only an introduction. So look forward to the Kin’s full-length release in 2011 and until then, please join them in their Velvet Hideout.
“If you don’t come out and see a show, then you’re very silly indeed. Because, soon you’ll need to be giving a cut to Ticketmaster.”
