Shane Wiebe

Shane Anthony Wiebe was born in Calgary, Alberta on January 12th, 1983 to father, John, mother, Grace, and two older sisters, Jamie and Tanya. At an early age Shane’s family packed up and moved to Abbotsford, British Columbia. He attended elementary school at Terry Fox Elementary in Abbotsford, moved on to Abbotsford Junior Secondary for grades eight and nine, and graduated from Abbotsford Senior Secondary in 2001 as valedictorian.

All through his younger years, Shane sang in church choirs and at youth groups, but when he came across Tony and Marlene Funk in tenth grade, things began to change. In grade eleven, Shane headed to Germany with Tony Funk, singing and touring throughout Europe. It was on this very trip that Shane would meet his future wife, Angela Bensler, who was also singing in the choir. Later that same year Shane began singing with the Vancouver Cantata Singers, stretching his skills as a choral singer.

After graduation and the recent passing of Shane’s father, Shane entered flight school with intentions of becoming a commercial pilot. With the intensity of the course load, combined with the musical endeavours Shane was pursuing, the program got to be too much, and he withdrew on September 10th, 2001. Naturally, the next day marked a change in global transportation and thus ended Shane’s pursuit of a commercial license. He did earn his private aviators license, however, and can be seen buzzing about the Fraser Valley skies from time to time. Still enrolled in the business administration program at the University College of the Fraser Valley, Shane continued toward his Business Degree, planning to specialize in human resource management.

In Winter of 2001 Shane would again come across the lovely Angela Bensler. She was in dire need of a pianist to accompany her on the violin at a Christmas concert and had sought out Tony and Marlene Funk for a suggestion. The two musicians became great friends and began dating in June of 2002. They were engaged in July of 2003 and married that December. Music for both Shane and Angela remained a hobby, and they performed at various locations throughout British Columbia. However, in April of 2004, having been urged by relatives to enter the Canadian Idol auditions, the next phase of Shane’s musical journey began.

Shane has just recently signed a national distribution deal with Maple Music, and his debut album will hit stores in mid to late July. The CD includes 11 tracks: nine originals (written or co-written by Shane) and two covers of songs Shane performed on Canadian Idol (Gordon Lightfoot's "The Way I Feel" and Bob Dylan's "Forever Young").
