The Rude Mechanicals would like to have a word with
the guy who said “You can never really go home again.”
Two years after moving from Prince Edward Island to
Toronto they’ve delivered the Moe Berg-produced
Checkin’ for Squirrels, a fun, honest and interesting
return to Canada’s east coast.
Recorded by Rudy Rempel at Toronto’s Chemical Sound
with special guests Damhnait Doyle, Bob Egan, James
Gray and Rose Bolton, Checkin’ for Squirrels finds The
Rude Mechanicals enjoying their new surroundings. It’s
a musical comfort-zone resulting from a decidedly
uncomfortable event—their relocation to unfamiliar
territory.
This relocation, a rite of passage for many young people
from small-town Canada, is a theme that is woven both
lyrically and musically through the album. The lead
track ‘Headin’ Out of Town’ is as simple as the message
gets, and is joined by the innocent ‘Bill Lynch Girl’, the
cynical ‘Dead Man’s Pond’, the whimsical ‘Preston’s
Bathroom’ and the lyrical juxtaposition of the upbeat
lead single ‘I Feel Sorry’.
