Memory Bank have been on a signing fury with their recent addition
to the Linus Entertainment roster and signing on to the Pilate/Boy
National Tour which kicks off in Moncton on October 12/04. The new
Memory Bank album "LITANY and LETHARGY" will be available October 5,
2004 through Linus/Warner.
It's a world tailor-made for psych-pop depressives, keepers of Sister
Lovers, and those who find themselves sitting alone with memories for
company. On the quartet's sophomore recording, Litany and Lethargy,
Memory Bank roams musical terrain that encompasses everything from
the creepy elegance of Sparklehorse to the airiness of The Doves,
stumbling as if by chance upon accidental anthems a la Radiohead and
the shimmering magic of Mercury Rev.
The band themselves refer to the new album as “more visceral and unfettered”
and while the subject matter may be at times elusive and disquieting, the end
result is oddly uplifting. As singer/guitarist Craig Browne, puts it, "You can
disguise anything with a happy melody and a spirited performance."
With the combination of Gassi, Guidoccio, Browne and Rockwood, all the elements
are in place. There's Browne with his fragile soprano vocals and guitar style
that veers from Chilton-esque chiming to J. Mascis-like ferocity, the Motown
rhythm section on morphine that is Gassi and Guidoccio, and the frankly
stupefying combination of Syd Barrett and Brian Eno that is Rockwood - all
adding up to a quartet that is capable of far more than even they are aware o
f at this point.
From here, who knows. The band has already garnered opening slots with such bands
as The Stills, The New Pornographers and Soundtrack Of Our Lives and has licensed
its music to Fox’s critically acclaimed series “24” and has provided the soundtrack
to The Movie Network documentary “Edge Codes”.
