Arousal Disasters (Aporia Records), according to Toronto-based Jonathan Seet,
is a collection of vignettes of what occurs to us when our desire consumes
us – our emotions can liberate or destroy us. While the songs explore some
deep dark erotic corners, they also touch on desire and lust in a more
general context.
Although Seet performed, produced and mixed most of Arousal Disasters he
wasn't flying solo on the entire project. He enlisted the talents of many
local artists; Dennis Mohammed (Wild Strawberries) on bass, Rob Greenway
(Brilliantfish, Amanda Marshall) on drums and percussion, Lisa MacIsaac (Mad
Violet) on violin, Rachel Smith on backing vocals and lead on "14 Candles",
as well as Tanisha Taitt on backing vocals for "Nasty Little Boys". Ray
Montford (Look People, Andy Stochansky) engineered and recorded the bed
tracks.
Seet’s first album, Melatonin (released in 2000) was a great launching pad to
induct the singer/songwriter into the local music/art scene. Songs from
Melatonin were included in a 2001 independent documentary (about Ontario’s
Presqu’Ile Provincial Park) which piqued Jonathan's interest to create darker
yet accessible melodies with intense visuals for Arousal Disasters.
Before completing Arousal Disasters, Seet composed what he likes to
call "audio wallpaper" for an art exhibition titled "Vesuvius" at the Sis
Boom Bah Gallery in Toronto and scored a Bravo!FACT funded film called "The
School" (Berkeley Films) scheduled for release in early 2003.
