Flash Lightnin' is a Toronto-based power trio whose legend was born in 2007 at
the Dakota Tavern, a wood-paneled and raucous basement bar in the heart of the
city's Queen West district. With their extraordinary chops and reverent yet
contemporary approach to blues-based southern rock and roll, Flash Lightnin's
weekly residency at The Dakota quickly became one of the hottest nights in the
city. These whiskey-soaked Wednesdays also emerged as an important gathering place
for Toronto's musician community, as the band's proficiency and explosive stageshow
earned them an overflowing audience that regularly included members of Broken Social
Scene, Blue Rodeo, Billy Talent, Feist, and Metric.
Destello (pronounced des-TAY-o, meaning "flash" in Spanish), the band's self-produced
debut EP features six original songs that capture the electric intensity of those sweaty
nights at the Dakota. With Darren Glover on guitar and vocals, Darcy Yates on bass, and
Chris Henry's rolling back beat, the band wears its influences of seventies ZZ Top and
Rolling Stones like a well-worn Nudie Suit, with rhinestone crests of Jack White and the
Black Keys.
Flash Lightnin' has already shared the stage with Metric, Wintersleep, The Breeders,
Sam Roberts Band and Broken Social Scene. Starting this fall they hit the road in support
of Destello to bring their stompin' boogie and electrifying rock to the rest of Canada for
the first time.
