Andrew Rodriguez
Biography

Here Comes The Light has been 5 years in the making; the title suggests a break in the clouds, a cathartic release. This album marks the rebirth of one of Canada’s most respected and admired songwriters.

Rodriguez fronted psych popsters Bodega who burst onto the scene in the late 90's with their album "Bring Yourself Up" which was nominated for a Juno for Best Alternative Album. After extensive touring around the world, Bodega went to Upstate New York to record with Dave Fridmann (Flaming Lips, Mercury Rev, and Clap Your Hands Say Yeah). The result was the critically acclaimed sophomore album Without A Plan.

In the time since the release of Without A Plan, Andrew built a home studio in his downtown Toronto apartment and began to record a library of song; the first release of his extensive output is Here Comes The Light. In between recording and writing sessions, Andrew lent his musical talent to the likes of Sam Roberts (Andrew's vocals and guitar work can be heard on the smash hit Brother Down), Hayden’s Skyscraper National Park and Boy (vocals on the hit Same Old Song). Melissa Auf Der Maur, a childhood friend and former band mate from Montreal pried Andrew out of the studio to go on the road as her guitar player for a world tour supporting her solo album.

Upon completion of the Auf Der Maur tour, Andrew formed the Wilderness with his good friends Jason Kent and Jason Ball (A Hopeful Monster). The band had a brief run that included playing with the Arctic Monkeys and childhood pal, Rufus Wainwright. With Ball moving back home to Halifax to start a family, Rodriguez and Kent shifted their attention to completing Here Comes The Light.

Fellow Montrealer Angela Desveaux was called upon to sing back up on the album, when she sang her parts for the track “Come On In” it bowled Rodriguez over and he asked her to sing the lead while he took the back up duties. The band Stars had always been fans of Andrew and Bodega, Chris and Evan from the band were more than eager to lend their horn playing to the album, their immaculate playing can be heard on the plaintive anthem “Breakfast”.

The songs on Here Come the Light are rich in texture and each song has been prepared with an incredible attention to detail. With each listen, you become more aware of the intricacies and nuances that have been painstakingly prepared to engage the listener and take them on a sonic and lyrical journey that is sure to enlighten and enthrall.
